— James is a physicist and entrepreneur. He was a co-founder and CTO of Lumerical, a Vancouver-based engineering software company specialized in photonics, which was acquired by Ansys in 2020. He has numerous publications, patents and conference presentations, and has been an adjunct professor at UBC. He continues to work as an Ansys Fellow.

James became interested in using the law to promote greater social justice when he was a graduate student at UBC and was involved with efforts to reduce fees for international graduate students, which led to the founding of the UBC Student Legal Fund Society. He has been a supporter of Pivot's work for many years and hopes that his knowledge and past experiences can be a benefit to the society.
