Pivot Legal LLP, a social enterprise of Pivot Legal Society, was established in 2006. Pivot Legal LLP’s mission is to provide quality, affordable legal representation to individuals and organizations.
Pivot's expertise and 100% of its profits support the public interest campaigns of Pivot Legal Society. It is the first public interest law firm of its kind in North America.
Pivot Legal LLP’s new website is designed to be an online information resource for people in need of legal information and assistance. It contains a searchable online database of free legal services in and around Vancouver, as well as an online library of legal information and FAQs.
The new website is in part a response to cuts by the B.C. government to legal aid in the province, cuts which began six years ago and occurred again most recently last month, with layoffs of 18% of Legal Services Society staff. These cuts have had a very negative impact on women and low income individuals. For details of the impacts of the recent cuts, see Pivot’s Brief on Cuts to Legal Aid.
A major goal of Pivot Legal LLP is to bring legal services within the reach of ordinary people. With a staff of 12 socially engaged lawyers, Pivot Legal LLP provides quality, affordable fee-for-service representation in a wide range of practice areas including: Bankruptcy and Insolvency; Business, Nonprofit and Charity; Personal Injury; Criminal; Family; Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship; Labour and Employment; Motor Vehicle; Residential School Survivor Claims; and Wills and Estates.
Pivot Legal LLP also provides free legal workshops for individuals looking for basic advice and information to help with a legal issue they are facing. Those workshops include:
